At Weeke Primary School we art artists and sculptors. We enthuse our children with a broad art curriculum where our children are encouraged to think critically and imaginatively. Art is an essential skill which enhances learning in other curriculum areas, developing transferable skills and building confidence. Generating ideas, mark making, assessing, and evaluating underpins knowledge and understanding. We believe all children are entitled to an expansive and exciting art education that opens possibilities and opportunities in a wide range of innovative and creative careers.
At Weeke Primary School, we follow an approach in Art that enables all our learners to build strong knowledge and skills in the subject. High quality teaching and learning is delivered to children through a spiral approach for each strand within Art. This approach is revisited in every year group, illustrated below in our Art ‘blueprint’:
Our units fully scaffold and support essential and age appropriate sequenced learning and are flexible enough to be adapted to form cross-curricular links. Creativity and independent outcomes are robustly embedded into our teaching and learning, supporting pupils in learning how to make their own creative choices and decisions.
The curriculum has been designed and implemented using a well-structured and recognised scheme from Kapow. To find out more about how Kapow have developed a clear and cohesive curriculum visit:
Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to engage and enthuse our children at Weeke Primary School, in such a way that the children are at the heart of evaluation, dialogue and decision making about the quality of their outcomes and improvements they need to make. By taking part in regular discussions and decision making processes, our children will not only know facts and key information about Art, but they will be able to confidently talk about their own learning journey, have higher metacognitive skills and have a growing understanding of how to improve. Our pupils will be able to leave Weeke Primary School, equipped with a wide range of techniques, the confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation for their Art and Design learning moving forward into Key stage 3 and beyond.
The expected impact of our Art curriculum at Weeke Primary School, will enable our children too:
A proportion of our children in Year 6 go on to our local secondary school - Henry Beaufort. We work closely with our secondary schools to support the best possible transition not only for the whole children but to ensure their successful curriculum journey continues. This includes curriculum opportunties where we visit the school or we have specialist teachers come to teach our children key knowledge, skills and understanding.
To gain a further understanding of the next step in our children's learning journey please visit Henry Beauforts curriculum pages. Here you will see how the Primary curriculum at Weeke enables the children to continue to make progress in given subjects.
During Summer term of 2023 we took part in the National 'Take One Picture' schools project. The children were inspired to create art based on Henri Rousseau, 'Surprised!' Our Art Leader worked closely with local community art and craft groups and planned a fantastic leanring opportunity for the children. The focus was around using techniques that are less accessible and familiar to primary age children. Please have a look at the pictures below of the children's experiences and the art gallery that was shared to all parents and children.
