Helping my child learn

Welcome to Year 5 at Weeke Primary School!

We are delighted to extend a warm welcome to Year 5 at Weeke Primary School, where pupils embark on an exciting journey of academic discovery, personal growth, and creative expression. Year 5 is a pivotal year as children continue to develop their skills, knowledge, and confidence in preparation for the challenges of upper Key Stage 2 and beyond. Our dedicated team of teachers are committed to providing a supportive and enriching learning environment where every child can thrive and achieve their full potential.

Development in Writing: In Year 5, we place a strong emphasis on developing proficient writers who can express themselves confidently and effectively across a range of genres and purposes. Through immersive writing workshops, creative writing tasks, and structured literacy activities, children explore the writing process from exploring ideas to drafting, editing, and publishing their work. We focus on developing advanced writing skills such as sentence structure, paragraphing, figurative language, and persuasive techniques, while also encouraging creativity, imagination, and critical thinking. Children have the opportunity to write across a variety of genres including narratives, recounts, reports, poetry, and persuasive texts, allowing them to develop their voice and style as writers. Our goal is to empower children to communicate with clarity, precision, and creativity, while also fostering a lifelong love for writing.

Development in Independence and Resilience: In Year 5, we foster the development of independence and resilience as essential life skills that empower children to take ownership of their learning and navigate challenges with confidence and perseverance. Through a supportive and inclusive learning environment, children are encouraged to take initiative, set goals, and make responsible choices in their learning journey. We provide opportunities for children to work independently, collaborate with peers, and solve problems creatively, building their confidence and self-efficacy. Alongside academic achievement, we place a strong emphasis on developing character traits such as resilience, perseverance, adaptability, and empathy, which are essential for success in school and beyond. By nurturing independence and resilience, we empower children to overcome obstacles, embrace new opportunities, and flourish as lifelong learners and responsible citizens.

Curriculum Overview: In addition to our focus on writing development, the Year 5 curriculum at Weeke Primary School encompasses a wide range of subjects designed to provide a rich and balanced education. Alongside English, Mathematics, and Science, children explore History, Geography, Art, Music, Design and Technology, Physical Education, and more. Our curriculum is carefully structured to promote intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and personal growth, preparing children for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
